A section of the technical report that I feel like I contributed

3.1 Increased Safety For Road Users

By improving visibility and traffic flow, the risk of accidents will also be greatly reduced. Through the implementation of Smart Roundabouts, road users will be more informed of incoming vehicles, thus greatly reducing the chance of getting into an accident.

Needless to say, roundabouts in general already improve overall safety performance, but with the added edge lights, they reduce the chance even further. According to Broom (2021), since 2016, the state of Indiana has replaced traffic lights with 256 roundabouts. The installation of roundabouts in Indiana has resulted in a decrease in accidents. There is a 90% decrease in fatalities, a 76% reduction in injuries, and a 30%–40% decline in pedestrian-related accidents. Additionally, with Smart Roundabouts, it hopes to reduce the fatality rates even further, making it safer for all road users.

3.2 Reduced Carbon Emissions

When there is traffic delay, it would increase idling vehicles which can be damaging to the environment. Based on research by Argonne, it is estimated that 11 million tons of carbon dioxide and 55,000 tons of nitrogen oxide are emitted into the environment from heavy-duty trucks idling. These numbers do not include the idling time of smaller vehicles waiting for traffic or a drive-through. These carbon dioxide emissions are harmful to the environment and the people living in the community as well. Hence, roundabouts ensure that vehicles are always moving which optimizes traffic flow, in return will minimize idling time for vehicles, which would result in a reduced carbon dioxide emission rate.

 3.3 LTA’s Land Transport Master Plan 2040

Lastly, The Land Transport Master Plan 2040 envisions a convenient, well-connected, and fast land transport system. It is characterized by a gracious and inclusive commuter experience that contributes to better health and safer journeys for all by 2040 (Land Transport Authority, 2022). The Smart Roundabout is able to provide and support safer and healthier traveling journeys for the public.
